International Summer School of Narrative Practice

Now that 2007 has begun we are busily getting ready for our first major event for the year. This is the International Summer School of Narrative Practice which is to take place here in Adelaide from the 21st-23rd of February. We very much enjoy these summer schools. Adelaide is beautiful at that time of year, with long summer evenings. They are also our chance to host international practitioners and reconnect with locals! This year, due to requests, we have arranged a slightly different program. There will still be rigorous, thoughtful keynote addresses from a range of international practitioners. These include:

Re-membering conversations                                            Jill Freedman (USA)
Re-Authoring conversations & rites of passage:
Working with men who have been violent                      Nancy Gray (Canada)
Responding to Trauma - work with children                   Angel Yuen (Canada)
Outsider Witness Practices                                                Shona Russell & Carolyn Markey (Australia)
Talking about Problems                                                      Maggie Carey (Australia) & Rudi Kronbichler (Austria)
The Absent but Implicit                                                      Michael White (Australia)

Following each of these presentations, there will then be practice sessions. These will be facilitated by experienced practitioners and participants will have a chance to try out the ideas discussed in the keynotes and hone their own questioning skills. For these practice sessions, participants will be grouped according to their level of experience so that the session is most appropriate. These sessions are to be facilitated by Art Fisher (Canada), Yishai Shalif (Israel), David Newman (Australia), Nancy Gray (Canada), Jill Freedman (USA), Rudi Kronbichler (Austria), Mark Gordon (Australia), Kath Muller (Australia), Carolyn Markey (Australia), Sue Mann (Australia), Maggie Carey (Australia).

We also plan a number of special presentations! These will include stories from Sue Mitchell who has recently returned from working in Kashmir with a team responding to those families and communities affected by the devastating earthquake that they experienced. We also hope to invite practitioners into considering ways in which they can work not only with individuals and families but also communities. Some easy to use ideas will be offered to assist practitioners to begin to link together those they are working with so that a greater sense of community can be generated.

Of course, we will also invite people back to Dulwich Centre in the evenings to enjoy fine South Australian wines! And music, as always, will be a significant part of the proceedings. It promises to be a diverse, rigorous and thoroughly enjoyable event. We hope to see you there!

PRE-SUMMER SCHOOL WORKSHOPS

To make your time in Adelaide all the more worthwhile there will also be opportunities to attend two pre-summer school workshops.

Michael White is offering a two-day workshop:

The Latest Developments in Narrative Practice with Michael White
19th-20th February.

This workshop will feature a review of many of the key ideas and practices of narrative therapy, and it will include an update on recent developments. Special attention will be given to the part that therapeutic questions play in the 'scaffolding' of rich therapeutic conversations. This provides opportunities for people to discover that they possess many 'insider' knowledges and problem-solving skills that are relevant to the predicaments over which they are seeking therapy. As people become more familiar with these knowledges and skills, many possibilities for action to address their problems and concerns suddenly become available to them. These possibilities contribute to many unexpected and delightful turns in therapy, and provide therapists with inspiration in their work. This workshop will be supported by numerous illustrations of heartening therapeutic journeys, and there will be an emphasis on skills training exercises for participants.

COST: $240 (inclues GST)

A free one day Introduction to Narrative Therapy workshop will also be held on the 20th February. This is for anyone new to the ideas, who is attending the summer school and would like a chance to learn about the ideas and practices of narrative therapy beforehand.
