24th November:
Re-creating hope through community participation
A FREE half-day workshop with America Bracho
9am-1pm
* Seeking ways of playing a part in the regeneration of communities?
* Looking for hopeful and effective ways of assisting marginalised groups?
* Searching for ways of empowering community members to become guardians of
their own health?
America Bracho is a Venezuelan doctor and the director
of Latino Health Access - an ‘institute for community participation’ influenced
by the work of Paulo Freire which is located in Orange County California. The
majority of people who Latino Health Access works in partnership with are
Mexican immigrants.
In a range of ways, Latino Health Access involves local
residents in addressing health concerns in their own neighborhoods, and in
reclaiming hope and pride. At
her keynote address at previous Dulwich Centre Publications' conferences,
America has inspired participants with her descriptions of effective grass-roots
approaches to community work to improve the physical and mental health of
communities affected by poverty and marginalisation:
The people with whom we work have often been deprived
of opportunities for hope. Over and over again we have found that in order to
have hope, they must believe that they can make a difference, that they can
influence change in their lives and the lives of others. It is our role to
create opportunities in communities where there are so few, for people to gain a
sense of their own talents, knowledges and skills and to put these to use to
improve the wellbeing of their own community.
This half-day workshop will be of interest to health
workers, therapists and community workers who are working with disadvantaged
communities, and anyone who wants to be inspired by the possibilities of
community regeneration.

PRACTICAL INFORMATION FOR WORKSHOP
PARTICIPANTS
This
workshop is to take place at Dulwich Centre which is located at 345
Carrington Street on Monday the 24th of November.
The
workshop hours will be 9am-1pm.
Please
arrive early – from 8:30am – in order to register and be seated by
9am. Thanks!
There is
only very limited parking near Dulwich Centre so if you can
travel by public
transport we’d recommend this. There is a trip planner for public
transport on the website of Adelaide Metro: www.adelaidemetro.com.au
We also
want to let you know that we will be filming this workshop. The
camera will be focused on America, not the audience, and we are
hoping that we will make a DVD of America’s work that will then be
available for those who were unable to attend the workshop.
We look
forward to seeing you on the 24th!
