Narrative practices have informed my
work in the area of responding to violence in the lives of men and women
for many years. Currently I teach full-time in a Social Work
programme where I am introducing more narrative ideas. I am
interested in conversations with people about how to be congruent with
narrative ideas in the area of teaching. I also provide
consultation in a small practice where I see individuals and couples. |

I seek to use
narrative practices in my clinical work. I also seek to teach
narrative therapy in the counselling training program that I direct.
I’m especially interested in the challenges of modelling narrative
practices in the teaching domain, and in finding ways of privileging
students’ knowledges in their training process. |

The intersections
of teaching, supervision, research, counseling and community work
nurture possibility in my everyday life. I coordinate a non-profit
community response to family violence for the largely rural region of
western Nova Scotia, Canada, and provide trainings on responding to
intimate partner and family violence. I apply and develop
deconstructionist theory and narrative practice in response to
complexities of experiences of love and abuse. I have a special
interest in developing the maps of narrative practice visually and
collaboratively within counseling, outsider witness and community
conversations. I thrive on conversations with others about these
topics. |

Stephen founded North America's first and longest
standing narrative therapy clinic and training site - Yaletown Family
Therapy - in March 1992 - he has honed a good nose for deft therapy
ideas ever since. In 1993, Stephen and YFT offered up their first
of five International Narrative Ideas and Therapeutic Practice
conferences. Twelve years later, YFT's Therapeutic Conversations Six
represents their latest effort to showcase brilliant therapeutic work
and to push conference dialogues forward towards vibrant and safe
cultural partnership discussions. He co-founded the APA approved
narrative and just therapy CE website
www.planet-therapy.com, and holds an MSW as well as a MSc and PhD in
Marriage and Family Therapy. Stephen is the father of nine year old twin
daughters Hannah and Tessa and his latest book 'The Social Life of
Problems - essays in narrative ideas and therapeutic practice' - will be
released in the Spring of 2005. |

I have been involved with
narrative practice and thought formally and informally since the
early 1990's and have taken part in many trainings, most recently
through the Dulwich Centre Post Graduate Program. I really enjoy the
practice particularly as it pertains to children and young people
and would enjoy conversations with others about this.

I have been
practising from a primarily narrative perspective for about 18 years
and have written and presented widely in this area as an academic as
well as offering trainings through the Glebe Institute, of which I
am director. My interest in linking with other narrative
practitioners includes the possibility of referring to therapists
elsewhere, or receiving referrals here, but just as much to
connecting with a global community for the possibility of sharing
ideas and practices in a variety of contexts.

Narrative ideas have brought coherency to my work both as a therapist
and as a social justice activist. I have felt particularly enriched and
encouraged by the practice of narrative group therapy which provides the
inspiration for often isolated and marginalized individuals to seek out
and create multiple communities of support. I have also run in both
provincial and federal elections in support of the social justice issues
which continuously emerge in my work as a therapist. |

I work alongside people in discussing the destinations
that become possible in their lives due to rich story development. I
love working with all persons, but if I were asked about a particular
interest I would say that I enjoy working with teenagers and women. In
my last few years of narrative practice I have enjoyed rich
conversations about race and cultural identity and would love to engage
in future conversations and explorations with other narrative
practitioners. |
