My interest in narrative therapy is longstanding, and stems from the energy, enthusiasm and respect these ideas and practices generate between people.  I am fascinated by  ideas of modern power, their connection with experiences of personal failure, and the possibilities that lie in exploring this.  I work in private practice with a wide range of people and with a rural, government funded counselling service.  I have a commitment to inspiring other people to learn about and practice from a narrative perspective, this includes offering supervision, some teaching and bringing other narrative folk to Brisbane to share their ideas.

I’m fascinated by the ways we interpret meanings from events in life and how these meanings influence our senses of identity, and our ideas about personal and communal agency; the application of narrative practice, and its philosophical underpinnings, has provided me with ongoing opportunities for curiosity around these processes, which I work to utilise in my life and work.

My hopes for narrative connections are to join with people and enhance our imaginations and creativity through verbal, metaphorical and artistic expressions. I enjoy working with people to explore new questions, new possibilities, to regard old problems from a different perspective, to enable supportive connections, and generate meanings and movement to new territories that are evolving constantly.

In linking with others with a Narrative Practice interest I wish to share the joy of working/living in uplifting, respectful and honouring ways. I work with children, adolescents and their families, clinical teaching and supervision in my public sector roles; and in addition also work with couples and individuals in my private practice. Narrative practice has opened up fresh ways for my work with domestic violence, child sexual assault, and other childhood trauma.

I have worked for many years with survivors of child abuse and neglect. Narrative practices help me integrate my professional and spiritual ways in that they affirm my belief in the value of each person; that they have their own truth but need support in finding and validating it. I am deeply Christian in a non-denominational way, and rarely attend church, which consumed my energy in the past. My passion is to help people develop rich stories of thriving to co-exist with their stories of pain and value their unique spiritual journey. Two years ago I moved to Iluka NSW between Ballina and Grafton to establish Iluka Retreats.

Hopes for connection

What sparked my interest in working from a Narrative framework was that it fit so comfortably with my personal beliefs and values about people and their capacity to step away from problems and towards new alternatives for themselves. I enjoy the dynamic challenging stance and find the hope and positivity contagious. I am interested in sharing these experiences with others and having the opportunity to cross-refer.

 I would also like to discuss:

-  ways of addressing assessment processes particularly in the health system

-  issues arising when hospitalisation and medical interventions occur.

I currently run a monthly supervision group for colleagues in my area. I am interested in expanding this area as I find it very reinforcing of my work and encourages further reflection on my practice!

Indigenous parenting / children / family issues, social justice, inclusion with equality, community development.

I am working part time in a very small service in rural New South Wales, working with people influenced by eating disorders service, and am VERY interested to hear from anyone else who is using narrative in this area of work – doing “assessments”, running groups, working with family members. I am doing some research study and, if anyone else is doing research using narrative in this area, I would especially like to hear from them. I am also interested in working with people who have experienced trauma.
