Talking about sex:
Narrative practice in regard to sexuality in heterosexual relationships
One day workshop with Yael Gershoni, Saviona Cramer &
Tali Gogol-Ostrowsky

While sexuality, and the ways in which it is experienced, influence self and couple identity, it is a topic that is often neglected in therapeutic conversations. Deconstructing ideas about sexuality is the focus of this workshop. Conclusions about the way people see themselves as sexual human beings are created within a cultural and a political context. These promote normalising judgements that lead to thin conclusions about one’s self, one’s partner and the relationship. ‘I’m not a sexual person’, ‘We do not fit sexually’, or ‘I’m a failure’, are some such conclusions. In this workshop, we will look at some of these ideas and the ways in which they construct our identity as human beings and as therapists. We will look at their influence on the lives of the people who consult us, and ways of assisting people to develop richer narratives of sexual identity.

Yael Gershoni, Saviona Cramer and Tali Gogol-Ostrowsky work as therapists and teachers at the Barcai Institute, Tel Aviv, Israel.
